A sixth grade writing assignment which drew accolades and encouragement from his instructor, was the beginning of a lifetime of writing for Arvid Huisman.
He served editor of his high school newspaper and as a reporter and photographer of his college newspaper.
While still a senior in high school, Arvid began working at the county seat radio station, a position which ultimately led to a full time job. He became news director of the station and also hosted a daily call-in talk show.
An opportunity to serve as sports editor of the Daily Freeman-Journal in Webster City, Iowa, steered Arvid to the newspaper business.
While enjoying the newspaper side of journalism, the demands of a family prompted Arvid to attempt advertising sales which landed him at the Sioux City Journal. A fortuitous move, Arvid was ultimately promoted to the position of advertising manager in 1981.
Seven years later the lure of general management called him to Creston where he served 12 years as the publisher of the daily News Advertiser.
In 2000, Arvid was named executive director of the Iowa Newspaper Foundation. He worked in management for the Omaha World-Herald's Iowa Newspapers., Inc., division in Ames and Adel.
In October 2007, Arvid was appointed director of development and communications for The Salvation Army in Des Moines. Late in 2009 his responsibilities were expanded to provide development and communication services to Salvation Army Corps in Boone, Fort Dodge, Marshalltown, Newton and Ottumwa.
Writing remains Arvid's avocation and today he writes a weekly newspaper column for several community newspapers in Iowa. He also writes a column for the bi-monthly Iowa History Journal.
Arvid and his wife, Cindy, reside in Ankeny, Iowa, where Cindy is employed at Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC.) They have two adult children.
